I recently had the opportunity and privilege to visit the island
known as ‘Ahvenanmaa’ in Finnish or better known as ‘åland’ in
Swedish. For those of you who do not know about this Island, it is located
between Sweden and Finland and belongs to the Finnish archipelago bordering the
Gulf of Bothnia. It has about 29,000 inhabitants and their national language is
in fact Swedish, even though they are officially a part of Finland
After several hours on the ferry we were fortunate enough to arrive
with the sun in the sky, which was a contrast to the dreariness and rain we had
seen the entirety of the week prior to our trip. Mariehamn is the largest town
and also the capital of åland.
This particular weekend was the one weekend of the year when they have
a harvest festival known as ‘Skördefesten’. The festival was made possible by
the local farmers who would allow people to visit their farms and have the
possibility to directly purchase their produce.
